Travel Advice

About Morocco

Safety

Morocco is basically a safe travel destination. You can travel the country without any danger. As in most big cities, there are also pickpockets in some areas of Morocco. It concerns mostly the big towns or places where there are a lot of tourists, but not the region around desert. Current security advice is available from the Department of Foreign Affairs of your country.

Mobile connection

The mobile connection in Morocco is in general very good. Even in desert phone calls and an internet connection are possible on some sand dunes.

Public transport

Most big cities are connected by the train. There are also a lot of bus connections between different cities. Well-known and comfortable bus companies are CTM and Supratours. For shorter distances between villages the shared taxis, so called Grand Taxis, are suitable. Within one city, the taxis, so called Petit Taxi, are popular. The general rule is that travel by bus or train is cheaper than rides by taxis.

Currency and money

The official currency of Morocco is the Dirham (DH). One Dirham equals 100 Centimes. It is not allowed to bring or to take Dirham into or out of Morocco. You can either exchange money in exchange offices or get money directly at an ATM. Small change is rare in Morocco but also important. Where it is possible, it is worth it to pay with big bank notes and to collect small change. It is not possible to use credit cards as readily in Morocco as one can in some other countries. You can use Euro, US Dollar, Swiss Francs or Dirham on all of our tours and trekkings, and the conversion rate is the current daily rate.

Language

Official language in Morocco is Arabic. Second official language is French. As a tourist in most parts of Morocco it will be possible to communicate in French. Oftentimes people who work in the touristic domain speak English. All our guides are able to speak Arabic, French and English.

Water / food

Moroccan cuisine is tasty and quite varied. It is worth trying many different meals. The general rule “cook it, peel it, or leave it” is also appropriate in this country. When using water to cook or brush your teeth it is recommended to just use cooked water or mineral water in bottles. Be careful also with ice cubes and salad washed with water.

Photography

Morocco has beautiful motives for photography. If you would like to take pictures of people, it is appropriate to ask them first. A lot of them will agree to it for a small fee (10-20 dirham), which is totally okay to give. Be careful with bridges, military areas and some buildings of the government. It is also not allowed to photograph military vehicles or soldiers and policemen working.

Rent a car

If you wish to discover a part of the country on your own, we are happy to help you to find a convenient car. We work together with an agency that rents cars and offers different types of vehicles. Contact us with our contact form or by e-mail if you wish further information.

Weather

The weather is different in all Morocco and depends on the region. In general, you can visit the country in all months, but for tours to desert the months between October and May are the best ones. In summer it can be very hot in desert, which is not equally good for everyone. In spring in desert there can be sporadic sandstorms, but they are totally not dangerous.

Tips

No one needs to feel forced to pay tips.  However, if you were happy with a service you got, tips are welcome because the general income in Morocco is not high. Common are tips between 100 and 200 Dirham per day and guide.

A general rule for preparing for the desert: there will likely be warm or hot days, and cool or cold nights. It is definitely worth bringing some warm clothes for evenings and nights. To protect yourself during the day from the strong sunlight, long but airy clothes and a turban are ideal. Especially in the months November and March there can be sporadic sandstorms. Our team is experienced and knows where to build the tents, so they are safe, and you are protected from the wind.

Accomodation

Like the nomads we will sleep in tents in the desert. Of course, it is possible, too, to sleep under the open sky. The clear view of the moon and the sky full of stars will remain in your memory for sure. Our team will bring the tents as well as all required material for the overnight stays.

Transport baggage

During the trekking some dromedaries will join us and carry our baggage and the equipment. So that the dromedaries don’t need to carry more weight than necessary, we ask you to just bring the needed items for the trekking. We can offer you the option to store your remaining luggage safely.

Electricity / battery

As we will travel like the nomads, we won’t have access to electricity. If you would like to charge your mobile phone or camera along the way, please bring your own chargers and batteries.

Food / meals / diets

In our trekkings the breakfast, lunch and dinner are included in the price. The meals are prepared by our cook with fresh and local ingredients. Vegetarian or vegan meals are of course possible without any problems. Also, diets and allergies can be respected. We ask you to inform us about it in your registration. If you start your trekking in Marrakech, on arrival and departure day it won’t be possible for our cook to prepare your lunch as we will be on the way between Marrakech and M’hamid. Our driver will take a break with you and bring you to a restaurant where you can enjoy your lunch.

If you wish to have special drinks you will have the opportunity to stop along the way and buy them.
